Challenging the Concept of Imposter Syndrome: A Riveting Discussion + Podcast

“If you created a word cloud of the most popular subjects on LinkedIn, somewhere between “let me help you skyrocket your sales” and “AI will destroy us all” is imposter syndrome. It seems to be everywhere.”

This is the theory of one of the most interesting thinkers  and brilliant marketers I know (and I don’t throw compliments like that around loosely).

He’s not wrong, if you browse LinkedIn’s trending topics, “imposter syndrome” frequently appears. In fact, the subject is so popular I’ve seen endless books, videos, blogs, TED talks, and the like on the subject, yet to be honest, it’s something I kind of rolled my eyes at. I know that’s terrible! But Mark, as he does, challenged my thoughts on the subject and shared some of his experience with it, and also with the lack of it.

Is imposter syndrome a real problem, or is it just the world’s way of renaming parts of the human experience and our mindset?

Further, what I realized in this, regardless of the answer, it doesn’t matter. If it stunts growth or acts as a hurdle, it doesn’t matter how we classify it or what we call it, we need to figure out how to overcome it.

In the latest episode of The Marketing Companion, Mark and I explore the multifaceted nature of imposter syndrome. Almost accidentally, I can’t help but bring up the concept of “brain training”—a method we were taught back in my previous career as a runner to build mental resilience and overcome setbacks. Why not apply these techniques in the business world?

This conversation is both provocative and practical. We delve into strategies that can help shift your perspective and build the mental toughness needed to navigate your career with confidence.

Don’t miss this episode! Tune in and decide for yourself: Is imposter syndrome an obstacle we need to accept, or a mindset we can change?
