Amanda Russell - Running For Their Lives

I have struggled with this disease for more than a decade, I know first-hand the long-term and devastating damage it does to both your physical and mental health."

This is a story that has never been told.

RED-S is a condition where there’s a shortage of energy available to keep up with the demands of exercise, on top of essential daily functions and the body goes into ‘energy saving mode’. This can cause serious long-term or even fatal issues like weakened immunity and delayed healing time from injury, cardiovascular issues, hormonal and metabolic diseases, osteoporosis, fertility disturbances, gastrointestinal consequences, among many others.

This silent disease has been hidden in women’s sports and causing an epidemic that has eluded the public eye for far too long.  It has ended sports careers early and caused women life-long physical and mental harm.

Finally, Winning
At All Costs Can Be Replaced With
Winning Without Compromise.

The current state of athletics is built around ‘training hard and embracing the pain’, which encourages overtraining and under fueling.  For the first time in sport, more than 60 members of an elite group in one sport stepped forward together to share their intimate struggles to raise awareness and educate about RED-S.  These athletes and coaches offered interviews and insights to create a rare glimpse behind the scenes in the athletic journey.

An immersive interactive showcase brings together experts to address societal and structural pressures, medical myths related to female athletes, and the long-term threat of the current training atmosphere which rewards behaviors that lead to RED-S.
